Start Drawing: Building a Compassionate Sketchbook Practice

$140.00

It’s time to take the intimidation and fear out of drawing and make it a practice of play, self exploration, and restoration. You’ll leave class learning how to see like an artist and build a visual language that is uniquely yours in an analog sketchbook practice.

Class starts Saturday, March 28th from 9:00 AM-11:00 AM PST

Start Drawing: Building a Compassionate Sketchbook Practice will last for four weeks, ending on April 18th.

We will have three instruction sessions, (on the 28th, 4th, and 18th) with a one week practice break on the 11th for you to work, test, wobble, learn, and catch up before our final session on the 18th!

Here are some highlights from the lesson plan I built for you:

  • learn to get familiar with traditional and playful drawing materials (pencil, charcoal, crayons, markers)

  • practice methods of drawing that focus on ease and play

  • study various traditional techniques for drawing from observation in our homes and in nature

  • write rules and intentions to guide our sketchbook practices to make them feel like a helpful teacher even long after class is over.

  • understand strategies for maintaining compassion and self tending when faced with failure, shame, and discomfort that come up when we draw as adults

  • discover strategies to build a resilient practice that we keep working with over time, even if we fall off a habit

  • get gentle, compassionate feedback that helps us feel safe and motivated to keep going when weird problems surface in our practices

My sketchbook is the place where my inner kid has fun, experiments, plays, and has a permission slip for weird things to take place. In this class, we are going to cultivate this place of play together. Want to see my sketchbook practice at work? You can peek through all of the sketchbooks I've made in the last three years here!
