watercolor & gouache class section 5:

putting it all together

with color

Section 5 Part 1:

inspiration in

uncommon shapes

In this introduction I'll help you feel more ready to take on your first full-color painting by showing you more artists who work with gentle abstraction and uncommon shapes in their work.

Remember that photorealism is not the goal of this class! Our goal is to get you comfortable with the process of playing with paint and color to convey your uniquely human perspective and celebrate the image you started with in a fun new way.

Section 5 Part 2:

alternative

color charts

Did you enjoy making Color Charts or happen to have a color that is still giving you trouble? I'll show you some other Color Chart setups that have helped me get more comfortable with different pigment behaviors.

Section 5 Part 3:

Using a projector

Whether you're using your own, or borrowing a projector from your local library, these tools make the process of drawing much faster. I'll show you how to position your watercolor block on the wall and scale the image to fit inside using a Mac. Window resizing is pretty universal whether you are using a Mac or PC.

Section 5 Part 4:

color painting demo

In this color painting demo, I am showing whats possible with both Watercolor and Gouache. You’ll watch me use Frisket to block out the lightest areas and move slowly from the most saturated colors to the most desaturated colors. This is a great strategy for beginners to avoid having muddy colors and it helps you experiment with gentle layering and washes.

Section 5 Part 5:

bonus color painting demo

In this bonus color painting demo, I’m really highlighting the power and potential of gouache. I put the color recipe I built in Section 4, part 5 to use by painting the Redwood trees in Big Basin State Park.

Here you will see me work in large blocks of color and emphasize layers using opaque gouache near the end. There are sections that have been cut to remove crosstalk from the original class recording.

Section 5 Part 6:

simplified forms

In this section we will bookend the lecture from the beginning of Section 5, exploring the incredible simplified forms of the artist Lois Dodd. I'll talk briefly about why her work is one of my greatest inspirations and show you a few plates in one of her art books.

STUCK ON SOMETHING?

If you are feeling stuck, frustrated, or longing for feedback, you can always book a tutoring session with me. We can work together for one session or over the course of a few months depending on your needs!
