    What are my students saying?

Mel is an amazing artist and not always are amazing artists good teachers.

But Mel has a tremendous facility to impart their knowledge to their students in a relatable way. I have taken two classes from them and hope to take many more. Loved this class too!

-Student in Beginning Watercolor from Photos

Mel's Watercolor and Gouache Class was an incredibly worthwhile use of my Sunday mornings over the last six weeks.

I now feel more confident setting up and starting a painting. I've learned many new techniques for building my skills—even when my energy and motivation are too low to create original work. They walked us through crafting and editing high-quality reference photos, what to look for when creating value studies and thumbnails, and painting techniques to achieve styles unique to watercolor and gouache.

I especially loved their focus on color and value—areas I hadn't explored much before that are significantly leveling up my work. Their compassionate approach to art, artists, and the learning process freed me from guilt about being behind on class projects.

It allowed me to tune in to the wealth of knowledge they shared. I would recommend this class to anyone wanting to improve their watercolor and gouache skills. It was incredibly informative and fun.

-Hilary W. - Watercolor & Gouache Online Class

I really loved this class : i attended online with a European-friendly time (thanks a lot !) as well as completed it with the replay. It's awesome to offer both. Mel is an awesome teacher, They take time to answer any questions the students might have, even by researching the information if needed, and they provide awesome feedback on our projects. It's been an awesome experience, both in person during the live classes and remotely thanks to the replays.

    this is a painting class

    to teach you craft,

    and locate your voice.

Newly updated for 2026, this watercolor-centric class will work with a limited palette (4 colors!) to help you keep creating anywhere life takes you. We are going to spend our entire class working on the craft of painting, but with an approach that will let your artistic voice shine. We will have short lectures each class with inspiration from artists who focus on expressive realism — the style of painting Mel works in. We will talk about elements and principles of design like composition and value, you’ll get clear, direct feedback to help you improve and grow your techniques.

Here is a breakdown of each section:

Week 0: What You Need to Start Painting

You’ll get access to a supply list explainer video to help you get everything you need before we start painting. That way, starting Week 1 we are diving right in, getting hands-on with paint.

Week 1: Swatching and Color Charts

In our first section, You will learn how your paint works, what it’s made of, and how to apply it to paper. You’ll develop embodied intelligence of how each pigment behaves by making a color chart. These exercises will help you get familiar with your brushes and know how to mix paint without getting overwhelmed.

Week 2: Composition, Shape, & Value

In this week you’ll learn the basics of composition and come away with a deeper understanding of what makes a good reference as your painting's foundation. We will create thumbnail sketches and play with some water-soluble drawing materials to start spotting shapes and values in images.

Week 3: Drawing Systems for Painting

In section three we will learn different systems for setting up a drawing, even if you can “only draw a stick figure” These systems function like training wheels making you feel more comfortable and safe easing into the idea of painting. We will practice them together, step by step and then learn how to mix our own black paint for practicing value sketches.

Week 4: Putting It All Together With Color

In this section you will apply the assignment of color recipes to a final full color painting inspired by a photograph. You’ll watch a lecture encouraging you to play with shape and not worry about perfect photorealism, but to embrace how you paint and approach the image. This section is full of two hour long demos you can watch and even make studies from!

Week 5: Individual 20-min 1-on-1 meetings with Mel

No class this week, this break will give you the space to catch up on assignments and continue to practice. Instead, you will be able to schedule 1-on-1 feedback sessions to get individualized and direct support on your progress. These meetings will keep you accountable and be the most compassionate critique imaginable to develop your unique creative voice.

Week 6: Balancing Precision and Play

In the final section of the class you will learn to build a dashboard for inspiration and how to study ways to play. While we work from photo references, this class will talk about abandoning exact systems for our own “artistic handwriting. You’ll learn strategies to further develop and train your intuitive senses as you continue making work.
