This six section self directed class is a total of 10 hours of lessons broken into approachable and easy sections to take you from total beginner to comfortable painter.
I’ve been teaching painting since 2012 and brought all my learning and refinement to this class. I will guide you through all the steps you need to start creating paintings with gouache or watercolor, inspired by photos, with confidence.
Making this a self-directed experience allows folks all over the world to take my most popular class at their own pace. You can take your time to complete this work in a way that works for your brain and lifestyle.
What are my students saying?
Mel is an amazing artist and not always are amazing artists good teachers.
But Mel has a tremendous facility to impart their knowledge to their students in a relatable way. I have taken two classes from them and hope to take many more. Loved this class too!
-Student in Beginning Watercolor from Photos
Mel's Watercolor and Gouache Class was an incredibly worthwhile use of my Sunday mornings over the last six weeks.
I now feel more confident setting up and starting a painting. I've learned many new techniques for building my skills—even when my energy and motivation are too low to create original work. They walked us through crafting and editing high-quality reference photos, what to look for when creating value studies and thumbnails, and painting techniques to achieve styles unique to watercolor and gouache.
I especially loved their focus on color and value—areas I hadn't explored much before that are significantly leveling up my work. Their compassionate approach to art, artists, and the learning process freed me from guilt about being behind on class projects.
It allowed me to tune in to the wealth of knowledge they shared. I would recommend this class to anyone wanting to improve their watercolor and gouache skills. It was incredibly informative and fun.

I really loved this class : i attended online with a European-friendly time (thanks a lot !) as well as completed it with the replay. It's awesome to offer both. Mel is an awesome teacher, They take time to answer any questions the students might have, even by researching the information if needed, and they provide awesome feedback on our projects. It's been an awesome experience, both in person during the live classes and remotely thanks to the replays.
-Student in Watercolor & Gouache Online Class
this is a painting class
focused on craft, not concepts.
No artist statements, no bullshit. We are going to spend our entire class working on the craft of painting. We will have short talks each class with inspiration from artists who focus on the craft of making art. I’ll talk about elements and principles of design like composition and value, you’ll get clear, direct feedback to help you improve and grow your techiniques.
Here is a breakdown of each section:
Section 1: What Makes a Good Photo
In our first section, I'll share my simple systems for finding and testing compositions, you'll get hands on in your sketchbook and with your camera (cellphone or digital camera!) and come away with a deeper understanding of what makes a good reference as your painting's foundation. You’ll learn how to make thumbnail sketches, play with values, and edit photos to your liking.
Section 2: Understanding Color
In section two we dive right in learning our paint by understanding how to mix and layer colors, then we will create color charts. The color chart system is the one Mel has used for years as a reference. It will help you confidently learn to mix what you see, understand the varied behaviors of different pigments, and help you get excited about painting. Plus, the color palette suggested in the supplies for the class is a wide gamut that will have you mixing almost any color you can purchase in a tube!
Section 3: Drawing Systems and Introducing Value
In section three we will learn different systems for setting up a drawing, even if you can “only draw a stick figure” These systems function like training wheels making you feel more comfortable and safe easing into the idea of painting. We will practice them together, step by step and then learn how to mix our own black paint for creating a value-only painting.
Section 4: Understanding Value in Paint
We will work with our mixed black paint to create detailed value studies of the images we selected, edited, and drew in the previous section. You’ll watch a lecture on shape and value and then follow along with two demos that show step-by-step how to understand applying values to your watercolor painting. By the end of this section you’ll understand clearly how much water to use, what brushes perform best at each step, and how we will apply this to a color painting
Section 5: Putting It All Together With Color
In this section you will apply the assignment of color recipes to a final full color painting inspired by a photograph. You’ll watch a lecture encouraging you to play with shape and not worry about perfect photorealism, but to embrace how you paint and approach the image. This section is full of two hour long demos you can watch and even make studies from!
Section 6: Staying Persistent
In the final section of the class I will walk you through building a dashboard for inspiration and how to keep things organized as you get inspired. Then we will go into a lecture on how and why we should make studies of other artists work in our sketchbooks before finishing the class up with a final recap on everything you learned.

Supplies you’ll need for the first session:
⭐️ A cameraphone (iPhone or Android) or a camera without a phone you are comfortable using.
⭐️ a sketchbook or 3-4 sheets of scrap paper for our assignment
⭐️ a pencil & eraser
⭐️ a pen
⭐️ a place to take notes
⭐️ your brilliant creativity
Supplies you’ll need for the main class:you won’t need these supplies until session 2 and I go over common supply questions in a Supplies Lecture.
Can you use different supplies than what you see listed here? Sure! Thats what the color chart in Section 2 is all about.
Art Supplies are expensive BUT purchase what is affordable and accessible for you.
I reccomend Windsor & Newton, Holbein, and Daniel Smith but these are studio quality paints which can be more expensive than student grade. Both will work for this class. You can use a HIMI gouache set, but the colors might do weird things.
As an added note on where to shop, Blick will always be cheaper and better than Amazon when it comes to art supplies. Michaels has incredible coupons when you sign up for their email list. Please don’t shop at Hobby Lobby or Amazon if you can help it.
1 Sketchbook (I recommend Talens Art Creation Sketchbooks, as they are the best value, but any sketchbook with mixed media paper will suffice!) Size-wise, I recommend smaller sketchbooks (3.5”x5”) are easier to manage but if you already have one with watercolor paper, stick to that and fill it! Don’t buy something new if you don't have to.
Brushes - 1 Wash Brush (can be flat or angle shader), 1 angle shader (1/4”), 1 round, and 1 filbert (i use a 6 but you might prefer the 8!) — if you already have brushes you like, bring those.
1 6”x8” Watercolor Block. I recommend the one from Fluid. Hot Press will be smooth Cold Press will have texture. Both are OK.
Cup for paint water (I use an old jam jar, old plastic ice cream containers work great too)
Pencil
Kneaded Eraser
Ruler (a clear one from Diaso is what I use!)
Air Tight paint container (optional) you can use a simple plastic palette for placing your paint, they will rehydrate just fine!
Paint Colors (watercolor AND/OR gouache):
Light/Lemon Yellow (cadmium free often called hansa yellow)
Medium/Deep Yellow (cadmium free often called hansa yellow)
Phthalo Green
Phthalo Blue
Ultramarine Blue
Burnt Umber
Cadmium Red Hue (often called naphthol or pyrolle)
Burnt Sienna
Yellow Ochre or Raw Sienna
BONUS COLORS (not required) Black, White, Opera Rose, and Dioxazine Purple
