queer self portraits

instagram archive

The following is a gallery inspired by the work of Cindy Sherman and an archive of a long performance of finding my queer, non-binary identity through selfies on instagram. Mostly taken while dancing in dead malls or rooftop parking lots.

It took many years for me to see these as part of my larger body of work, but looking back, they were representatives of me claiming my power in public.

After growing up in the midwest, hearing fundamentalist and controlling religions/political leaders demonize queer identities, I never felt comfortable being queer or being a “woman". Identities that were seen as acceptable never fit me. Despite the circumstances, I finally made the choice to come out in 2017, despite the fact that in Missouri at the time, I could be fired from my job for my identity.

The following is in chronological order from 2017-2020, living in Kansas City, Missouri and ending after moving to California.
