When I arrived at camp in Sequoia National Park, the ground was littered with lichen from a recent windstorm. Bright chartreuse green fairy cups and fruticose lichen became an instant fascination. I gathered them, along with a beautiful piece of granite on a fresh Jeffrey Pine stump, still smelling of it’s vanilla tinged sap as an offering and protection altar. We were camping 150 miles south of a wildfire, and I felt the pull to perform a ritual to keep us safe.
