watercolor & gouache class section 4:
understanding
value in paint
Section 4 Part 1:
Value, Opacity, and Shape
In this introduction, you'll look deeper at Value and Shape while also starting to explore opacity. With watercolor and gouache, we can change the value of the color through the ratio of water to paint. In this sections assignments, we will practice that in depth and also explore the possibility of layering opaque paint using gouache.
Section 4 Part 2:
value painting demo
In this section I will be giving a long demo where I show you how to use Frisket (optional) for masking the white of the paper and then building the values using varying opacity of our mixed black paint.
Section 4 Part 3:
setting up the grid
Now we will put the grid method into practice using an analog system and a print out of our photo. Would you prefer to do this digitally? Refer to Part 5 instead where I walk you through using a template in Keynote.
Section 4 Part 4:
achieving opacity
In this optional demo I will be talking about different strategies for achieving opaque layers with gouache. The differences between trays of paint and using it straight from the tube and the brushes you'll want to use to get most pigment possible onto your paper.
Section 4 Part 5:
color recipes
Now we shift from value into color by tiptoeing in with another chart strategy. In your sketchbook, you'll study the photograph you plan to paint and practice mixing as many of the colors you can see.
As you mix each color, you'll write a cheat note of the mixture, how much you used (optional) and any other info you need to recreate the color later. This is super important as we need to explore getting the colors accurately before we start playing around with drawing and form as well. Consider the opacity of your colors and their value as you go!
STUCK ON SOMETHING?
If you are feeling stuck, frustrated, or longing for feedback, you can always book a tutoring session with me. We can work together for one session or over the course of a few months depending on your needs!
